The Fuel Audit: Is your food fueling you or fighting you?

healthy food

The food and drink you consume each day shape your energy, focus, mood and ability to heal. Nutrition is our fuel, but in a way, it is also information. Every bite tells your body how to function, what to repair and when to restore.

When the fuel is high-quality, such as whole fruits, vegetables, proteins and healthy fats, your body thrives. But when the diet is filled with sugar, ultra-processed foods and alcohol, the engine clogs and performance falters.

Research consistently shows the risks. High intake of added sugars has been linked to increased risk of cardiovascular disease, even when ruling out other factors. Likewise, excessive consumption of ultra-processed foods is associated with a higher risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular conditions and even cognitive decline. Meanwhile, alcohol, though socially accepted, acts as a neurotoxin, with the World Health Organization classifying it as a carcinogen that raises the risk of multiple cancers.

Nourishment matters because it directly influences inflammation, metabolism and long-term resilience. Chiropractic care fits into this picture by supporting digestion, advising on nutrition and helping patients reduce systemic inflammation that can result from poor diets.

Mini-Routine to Nourish Your Engine

Making small, intentional changes to your daily food choices can transform your energy and long-term health.

Here are a few to start:

  • Build a Smarter Plate: Fill half your plate with colorful vegetables and fruits, one quarter with quality protein such as chicken, fish, beans or eggs and one quarter with whole grains like quinoa or brown rice. Add healthy fats like avocado or olive oil for balance.

  • Choose Whole Over Processed: Shop the perimeter of the grocery store, where fresh items are found. Use tools like the Yuka app to scan labels and avoid products packed with artificial ingredients and preservatives.

  • Hydrate Wisely: Replace sodas and flavored coffees with water, herbal teas, or sparkling water without added sugar. For a natural electrolyte boost, try coconut water or a simple homemade sports drink of water, citrus juice, a pinch of salt and a touch of natural sweetener.

  • Rethink Sugar: The American Heart Association recommends limiting added sugar intake to no more than 6 teaspoons daily for women and 9 teaspoons for men. Compare that to the average U.S. intake of 17 teaspoons per day. Start by cutting back on sugary beverages, since they are the largest source of added sugars in the American diet.

  • Partner with Your Doctor of Chiropractic (DC): We are trained in nutrition and focused on whole-being health strategies. We can help identify inflammatory foods, recommend supplements and support your personal goals for sustainable, balanced eating.

supplements

Nutrition is your internal and external pharmacy. Ultra-processed foods, excess sugar and alcohol all fuel inflammation, which is the foundation of many chronic conditions. Conversely, when you choose real, nutrient-dense foods, you nourish your brain, support your spine and nervous system and reduce your risk for disease.

D.D. Palmer, the founder of chiropractic, recognized more than a century ago that inflammation is the essential characteristic of what he called “dis-ease.” Decades of scientific research confirm that inflammation from poor diets is linked to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, depression and cognitive decline. The good news is that you can fight back with every meal.
