What’s Really Happening During “The Crack or Pop”?

If you’ve ever been to a chiropractor, you may have heard a small sound during an adjustment. It’s that distinct pop or crack that sometimes is heard during an adjustment. For some, it’s a satisfying "ahhh" moment; for others, it’s a bit startling.

But what is actually happening inside your body? Despite what it sounds like, your chiropractor isn’t "cracking your bones" like a dry glow stick. Let’s dive into the reality and science behind the noise.

The Popping Sound

The sound you sometimes hear is officially called a cavitation. Inside your joints, there is a lubricating fluid called synovial fluid, which contains dissolved gases like oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide.

When a chiropractor performs a precise adjustment, it creates a change in pressure within the joint capsule. This pressure change sometimes causes those gas bubbles to be released or "pop." It’s essentially an exchange of gas bubbles—very similar to what happens when you open a pressurized soda can.

The Nervous System Connection

While the sound gets all the attention, the real magic happens in your nervous system. An adjustment is designed to do far more than just make noise:

  • Stimulates Nerve Receptors: The movement wakes up the receptors in your joints and sends signals to your brain.
  • Improves Coordination: It helps your brain better understand where your body is in space (proprioception).
  • Boosts Muscle Function: By clearing interference, your muscles can fire more efficiently.
  • Initiates Healing: By clearing interference, your body can start to do what it does best, function normally and start the healing process.

In short, the adjustment helps your body move better, communicate better, and heal better.

Is the Sound Required?

Here is a "hush-hush" truth: The pop is optional and often never occurs.

Whether you hear a loud crack or complete silence, the adjustment is still working. The benefit comes from the precise movement of the joint and the stimulation of the nervous system, not the decibel level of the cavitation. If a joint moves exactly how it needs to without a sound, you are still getting 100% of the neurological benefit.

The Bottom Line: Don’t let the noise (or the lack of it!) distract you from the incredible work your body is doing. Your nervous system is recalibrating, your joints are regaining mobility, and your body is heading toward a state of healing.
